Stéphane Ghislain Roussel and Anne Horvath workshop. Case of the exhibition “Opera as the World. The quest for a total work of art” (“Opéra Monde, la quête d’un art total”) workshop

Exhibition “Opera as the World. The quest for a total work of art” included in the program of the celebration of the 350th anniversary of the Paris National Opera, aims to investigate the phenomenon of the unity of arts (German Gesamtkunstwerk), based on the principles of the development of the art of opera. The exposition is created in accordance with the principles of staging an opera performance and consists of 10 “micro acts”. It does not follow the chronology of the genre development, but addresses themes and ideas related dramatically, which together allow the visitors to gain experience of the very “unity of arts”, which is innate to Wagnerian tradition.

The exhibition does not seek to fully cover the topic. It affects all the senses and shows how the opera, on the one hand, borrowed from the visual arts, and on the other hand, nourished them. Małgorzata Szczęśniak, a permanent co-author of the theater director Krzysztof Warlikowski and the stage and costume designer of his performances created the scenography of the exhibition.

Exhibition curators Stéphane Ghislain Roussel and Anne Horvath will tell you how creating an exhibition project that affects all the senses allows you to explore the traditional genre of opera, which appears as a space of experiment and, at the same time, of social adequacy.

About the program:

This workshop is a part of the section «Theatre and museum. Project work» within the educational program «Theatre and museum. Collaboration experiences».
